Thymus, rebound enlargement

The thymus shrinks in response to steroids, surgery, stress or infection. When it recovers, following removal of the stress, there is often a rebound enlargement. This can cause difficulty in the older child, following chemotherapy for neoplasia, where the enlarged thymus cannot be differentiated from recurrent disease without further imaging and sometimes biopsy.
