Paediatric ImagingShort bowel syndrome
A short bowel with failure of absorption leads to a clinical presentation of diarrhoea, steatorrhoea, malnutrition and failure to thrive. In children short bowel syndrome is almost always secondary to surgical resection of the bowel in the neonatal period. Radiologically, the remaining bowel increases in diameter with thickening and hypertrophy of the bowel wall, and poor peristalsis.
