Severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome

(SCID), a group of immunodeficiencies with major deficiency of both the T cell and B cell functions. Autosomal recessive SCIDs (T-cell receptor deficiency) and X-linked SCIDs (defect in cytokine recognition by B cell receptors) are two forms. Defects in T-cell enzyme production, both adenosine deaminase and purine nucleoside phosphonylase deficiency, is a third form. Children present with failure to thrive, infections including pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), candida and cytomegalovirus infection (CMV), affecting skin, lungs, bones and gastrointestinal tract.
