Retroperitoneal tumour

a tumour arising in the retroperitoneum. Technically, any tumour arising in the pancreas, adrenal gland or kidney is a retroperitoneal tumour, but the term is conventionally used to describe retroperitoneal teratomas or sarcomas (Fig.1). The most frequent benign tumour arising in the retroperitoneum is a lymphangioma.

Axial MR scan of a girl who presented with a history of lethargy. The image shows a soft tissue mass arising in the region of the tail of the pancreas, with both liver and kidney metastases. Histologically, this was a retroperitoneal sarcoma.
