inflammation affecting the labyrinth. It may be seen in children with chronic otitis media and presents with facial palsy or vertigo. Causes include toxins, viral infection (mumps and measles) and bacterial infection. Bacterial infection may lead to labyrinthitis ossificans where the inner ear structures become bone, resulting in bilateral or unilateral profound deafness. For further description, see
