Fat plane, pronator quadratus

a normal fat plane that lies volar to the pronatus quadratus muscle. This may be seen on a lateral radiograph of the wrist as a linear lucency, projected volar and approximately parallel to the distal radial shaft (Fig.1). Effacement or anterior displacement of this fat pad may be seen with distal radial or ulnar fractures and may be helpful in the radiological detection of subtle fractures.
