Cellulitis, retropharyngeal

infection of the retropharyngeal space at the level of the nasopharynx or oropharynx often with accompanying enlarged lymph nodes. Children often have a preceding history of respiratory tract infection. Complications include sepsis, abscess or suppuration, airway compromise and extension into the superior mediastinum. Cellulitis is often a precursor of retropharyngeal abscess.
