Paediatric ImagingCaudothalamic groove
an anatomical landmark on the floor of the lateral
ventricle formed by the white matter of the internal
capsule which forms a groove between the head of the caudate nucleus and the thalamus. In the premature infant (less than 35 weeks gestation), the germinal
matrix may persist in this area and predispose the infant the development of subependymal (grade I intraventricular)
haemorrhage. This landmark is used in cranial
sonography to assist the detection of subependymal
haemorrhage. The groove is best seen on parasagittal imaging of each lateral
ventricle (
Fig.1).
