Paediatric ImagingCongenital nephrosis
(also called Finnish nephropathy), an autosomal recessive condition with end stage
renal failure developing in the first few years of life.
In utero this causes a rise in the alpha-feto-protein which can be detected in maternal serum or amniotic fluid. Antenatal
ultrasound shows enlarged echogenic kidneys which whilst not diagnostic are extremely suggestive of the condition. Postnatally the kidneys appear enlarged and echogenic on
ultrasound.
