Avascular necrosis, capital femoral epiphysis

ischaemic necrosis of the capital femoral epiphysis. In children this is most commonly idiopathic referred to as Perthes disease. Occasionally it may be secondary to a recognized cause such as trauma, corticosteroid treatment, haemoglobinopathies (Fig.1), Gauchers disease or irradiation. The radiological appearances are described in detail under Legg Calv Perthes disease.
