Airway obstruction, lower

obstruction of the airway distal to the carina, due to an intraluminal obstruction or narrowing of the bronchus (Fig.1). Bronchial narrowing may be intrinsic to the bronchial wall, or may be extrinsic, due to external compression. The commonest cause of bronchial obstruction in childhood is an aspirated foreign body (see bronchial foreign body).
