Head and Neck ImagingSynovial chondromatosis
uncommon condition in which there is formation of cartilaginous particles in the synovium, that can calcify or ossify and detach into the
synovial space. For a more detailed description, see
chondromatosis. This disease is rarely seen in the
temporomandibular joint. It causes variable symptoms, including pain, grinding or clicking joint sounds, limitation of motion and
intermittent periarticular swelling. Sometimes no symptoms are present.
CT may show the presence of free bodies around the mandibular condyle, if calcified; secondary arthrotic joint changes may be present. The MRI findings include joint effusion, irregular appearance of the joint surfaces and intra-articular hypointense structures corresponding to the cartilaginous particles.
