Head and Neck ImagingSupernumerary teeth
teeth found in addition to the normal teeth. The condition is also known as hyperdontia. They occur in 1-4% of the population and are seen in the deciduous but more frequently in the permanent dentition. They do not usually erupt and may lack a recognizable tooth form. They may be single or multiple and occur anywhere in the jaws. They may be part of a syndrome.
A mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth found between the maxillary central incisors; a distodens is found distal to the third molar; a paramolar occurs in the molar region. Supernumerary teeth may cause impaction or delayed eruption of other teeth, which may suggest clinically congenital absence of normal teeth. Supernumerary teeth are easily recognized radiographically.
