first tumour-draining lymph node. The sentinel node of a head and neck cancer can be localized with dynamic lymphoscintigraphy using a gamma probe. The value of this technique combined with ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration cytology (see interventional ultrasound), is currently being investigated; preliminary results indicate a very high accuracy with this combined technique.
