Scutum

Thin bony plate separating the upper part of the middle ear (epitympanon) from the mastoid cells; its lower edge is the upper part of the bony ridge on which the tympanic membrane is attached. The scutum is eroded at a relatively early stage by secondary cholesteatoma.
