Head and Neck Imaging

Sarcoidosis

systemic granulomatous disease of unknown cause. For a general discussion, see sarcoidosis. In the head and neck, the orbits are involved in about 45% of cases; this may include the eye, extraocular muscles, conjunctiva, lacrimal glands and optic nerve. Parotid gland involvement is seen in about 20% of cases; in such cases, multiple noncavitated masses are seen in the parotid gland on CT or MRI, in most cases bilaterally. Also, see Heerfordts syndrome.
