Head and Neck ImagingPharyngobasilar fascia
the most superior fibres of the pharyngeal constrictor muscles do not reach the skull base. Above the level of these muscles, the
lumen of the nasopharynx is held open by the thick pharyngobasilar fascia, attached to the skull base. The pharyngobasilar fascia has an opening (known as the
sinus of Morgagni) traversed by the cartilaginous part of the eustachian tube and the levator veli palatini muscle. This area should be carefully inspected on imaging studies of the nasopharynx as it represents a common route for lateral spread of nasopharyngeal cancer (see
nasopharynx cancer).
