Mandible

1. Anatomy

lower jaw; it consists of a bilaterally symmetrical body; the midline portion is called the symphysis. The superior part of the body is called the alveolar process and contains the lower teeth. The body joins the vertical ascending ramus at the angle. Each ramus has a condylar process (ending in the mandibular condyle) and a coronoid process. Also, see mandible.

2. Pathology

Congenital anomalies

Several syndromes are associated with mandibular malformation, for example craniofacial microsomia, Treacher Collins syndrome.

Inflammatory pathology

The most common infectious disease of the mandible is caries; see abscess dental, periodontal disease, dental implants.

Tumoural pathology

The most common tumoral pathologies of the mandible are odontogenic cysts, and more rarely, odontogenic tumours. Several nonodontogenic tumours may affect the mandible. Malignant tumours include invasion by squamous cell carcinoma head and neck and sarcoma, mainly osteosarcoma head and neck; mandibular metastasis and non Hodgkin lymphoma head and neck manifestation are rare lesions.
