Head and Neck ImagingFollicular cyst
(also called dentigerous
cyst), a follicular
cyst forms around the crown of an unerupted, developing tooth. It is the second most common of all the
oral cysts (after the
radicular cysts) and the most common pericoronal radiolucency. It usually involves the crown of an unerupted mandibular third molar, maxillary canine or maxillary third molar. Radiographically, an unilocular
cyst including the crown is seen. Follicular cysts grow slowly but may cause bone expansion. Multiple follicular cysts are associated with
basal cell naevus syndrome and
cleidocranial dysostosis. Also, see
odontogenic cyst.
