Epiglottitis

acute bacterial infection of the supraglottis, caused by Haemophilus influenzae, most commonly seen in young children. The infection is rapidly progressive and may lead to complete airway obstruction. The typical plain film sign is thickening of the free edge of the epiglottis, known as thumb sign.
