congenital abnormality characterized by underdevelopment of one half of the face. Mandibular and maxillary hypoplasia, macrostomia, microtia, external auditor canal atresia or
stenosis and
middle ear malformations (small middle ear cavity, abnormal or absent ossicles) may be present. It is also called hemifacial microsomia, but in about 20% of cases the malformations are bilateral but asymmetrical.
Goldenhars syndrome is a variant of craniofacial microsomia, showing additional eye and vertebral column malformations.
