Caries

common infectious disease affecting 95% of the population. In susceptible individuals, bacterial plaque is able to ferment sugars, resulting in a drop in plaque pH. Below a certain threshold, enamel demineralization occurs. Bacteria may penetrate the enamel, resulting in a microscopic cavity. Untreated, caries may progress through the enamel, dentine and pulp, destroying the entire tooth.

As caries produces tooth demineralization, it can be shown radiographically. Intraoral radiography can reveal carious lesions that might go undetected during clinical examination. Radiographic examination can also detect spread of infection into the periapical region (see abscess dental and dental cysts).
