Head and Neck ImagingAids, head and neck manifestation
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a transmissable retroviral disease caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus. For a general description, see acquired immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS . Among the head and neck manifestations of AIDS are opportunistic sinonasal infections (with Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), disseminated infection with Histoplasma capsulatum (lymphadenopathy, pharyngitis, ulcerating oral lesions, rarely sinusitis), oral candidiasis, Kaposi's sarcoma of the skin and mucosal surfaces, and lymphoma typically involving Waldeyer's ring. HIV-positive patients may show multiple and bilateral parotid lymphoepithelial cysts, associated with multiple neck lymphadenopathies and hypertrophic adenoids.
