NeuroradiologyReye's syndrome
(Ralph Douglas Kenneth Reye, 20th century, Australian physician), a severe disease that develops in children recovering from a presumed viral illness characterized by vomiting and lethargy, followed by death in 20% of cases. An interaction between the viral agent and a toxic cause (salicylates, insecticides) has been postulated. All patients show evidence of liver failure with elevated serum transaminases and ammonia. CT and MR may show diffuse cerebral oedema with low attenuation (CT) and prolonged T1 and T2 relaxation times (MR). Basal ganglia may be involved.
