Primitive hypoglossal artery

artery arising in the upper neck as a large branch from the internal carotid artery, traverses the anterior condyloid foramen and, beyond its junction with the basilar artery, may be the sole source of blood flowing to the occipital lobes via the posterior cerebral arteries (see carotidovertebrobasilar anastomosis persistent).
