Osteoporosis

metabolic disease of bone, usually age-related but also found in some endocrine diseases (Cushing, acromegaly, hyperparathyroidism) characterized by qualitatively normal but quantitatively deficient bone.

In the spine vertebral bodies are affected, resulting in wedge-shaped vertebrae and compressed vertebrae. Pain is the most common symptom; rarely myelopathy may result.

Plain films show the radiolucency and vertebral deformities. MRI is useful in demonstrating the cord involvement. Also, see osteoporosis.
