Neuroradiology

Embryonal tumor (primitive neuroectodermal or PNETs)

The new concept of PNET is based on the assumption that these lesions show a common origin of multipotential neuroepithelial cells, which may undergo malignant transformation. This leads to tumors at various levels of the CNS, with identical histology, morphology and biological behaviour. The most common lesions are:

- medulloblastoma;

- neuroblastoma;

- pineoblastoma (search: pineal region neoplasm);

- ependymoblastoma (search: glial neoplasm).

Medulloblastoma is also called the posterior fossa primitive neuroectodermal tumor or PNET-MB.

Neuroblastoma is called the supratentorial PNET.
