Neuroradiology

Dolichoectasia, vertebrobasilar

condition in which the basilar artery has an elongated and tortuous course and an increased calibre. The main causes are atherosclerosis, hypertension and aging. Calcification is usually associated and extreme cases appear as fusiform aneurysms.

When symptomatic, compression of cranial nerves with neurovascular conflicts (trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm) may result. It is well demonstated by CT, and particularly MR, angio MR and angiography.
