Choriocarcinoma

rare, highly malignant germ cell tumour of the pineal region (see pineal region tumour) devoid of specific characteristics on imaging studies as compared to other germ cell tumours except for the fact that they display a higher tendency to haemorrhagic degeneration. Prior to biopsy, the diagnosis may be suspected clinically on the basis of CSF analysis of tumour markers. Choriocarcinoma expresses the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (-HCG) but not alpha-fetoprotein (AFP).
