NeuroradiologyBrain birth trauma
Birth is a traumatic event and different types of injury may affect the fragile and immature nervous tissue: anoxia, ischaemia and direct traumatic processes.
Different types of lesions result, among which are birth asphyxia (see hypoxia perinatal, asphyxia in neonates), haemorrhage, both extracerebral (posterior fossa or interhemispheric subdural haematomas), subarachnoid, intracerebral and intraventricular haemorrhage, hydrocephalus.
Extracranial haemorrhage in the form of caput succedaneum (haemorrhage and oedema beneath the skin of the head) and subgaleal haemorrhage, cephalohaematoma may also occur and usually resolve spontaneously within a few days.
CT and ultrasound are the imaging modalities of choice for the evaluation of birth trauma.
