(Jozsef Matthius Balo, 20th century, Hungarian physician) (also called encephalitis periaxialis concentrica), a rare progressive form of multiple sclerosis, that affects young patients, characterized by large areas of demyelination with alternating, concentric rings of demyelination and remyelination or sparing of myelin. The disease has a severe clinical course with fever and headache suggesting infectious disease. MR has a specific pattern corresponding to pathology of rings of T2 hyperintensity alternating with isointense rings in the affected area.
