Infarction

an area of necrosis within a tissue due to anoxic death to cells. It is usually due to sudden obstruction of the artery supplying an area of tissue. It can also be caused by oxygen or energy demands exceeding blood flow to the area even in the presence of a patent artery. Myocardial infarction is caused by occlusion of a coronary artery.
