Heterotaxy syndrome

a complex of congenital cardiovascular and gastrointestinal anomalies associated with anatomically uncertain or indeterminate configuration of thoracic and abdominal viscera. Visceral heterotaxy is frequently associated with asplenia syndrome with or without bilateral right-sidedness or polysplenia syndrome with or without bilateral left-sidedness (see asplenia syndrome cardiovascular manifestation and polysplenia syndrome cardiovascular manifestation. Cardiovascular anomalies are varied and usually severe. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI are the most effective techniques for documenting splenic anomalies, configuration of the viscera, bronchial and pulmonary arterial morphology.
