Cardiovascular Imaging
Cystic medial necrosis
degenerative
disease of the media of the
aorta
and other arteries with loss of elastic tissue and muscle cells. It is a
pathological
substrate for
aortic dissection
. It may also be manifested by proximal aortic ectasia or
aneurysm
.
Cystic
medial necrosis may occur as an isolated abnormality or as part of a systemic connective tissue disease such as
Marfans syndrome
or
Ehlers Danlos syndrome
. There is an increased risk of
cystic
medial degeneration and aortic or arterial
dissection
during pregnancy.
