Bernoulli equation

(Jacob Bernoulli, 1654 - 1705, Swiss mathematician), hydraulic formula describing the relation between velocity changes and pressure gradient across an obstruction. A modification of this equation is used to estimate the maximal instantaneous and mean transvalvular pressure gradients across stenotic valves. It estimates the instantaneous pressure difference on the two sides of the valve. The modified equation is : P = 4V2, where P represents peak pressure gradient and V is the peak velocity of flow across the valve. The data for this measurement are usually derived from continuous wave Doppler echocardiography. Phase contrast (velocity-encoded) cine MRI data have also been used for this calculation. Also, see Bernoulli equation.
