Cardiovascular ImagingAortography
X-ray projectional image of the
aorta after opacification by iodinated contrast media. The contrast media is injected with a
catheter placed into the
thoracic (
thoracic aortography) or
abdominal aorta (
abdominal aortography). Serial images are recorded on
X-ray film or in a digital format and displayed on a monitor. Digital recording is now favoured because it is cost effective, convenient, and permits image manipulation and processing. Because improved background subtraction and image contrast enhancement are provided with digital techniques, a lower dose of contrast media can be administered.
Thoracic aortography is occasionally recorded on
cine film when performed in association with
coronary arteriography or
ventriculography. Also, see
thoracic aortography.
