Aortic occlusion

complete obstruction of the abdominal aorta. It is usually caused by atherosclerosis and/or embolism. Atherosclerosis of a diminutive distal aorta tends to occur in women causing the Leriche syndrome. Occlusion of the aortic bifurcation occurs in about 20% of cases of peripheral arterial embolization. Primary thrombosis of the abdominal aorta is rare but may occur in patients with antithrombin III deficiency.
