Angiodysplasia

ectasia of small vessels in the mucosa and submucosa of the caecum and ascending colon. It is a cause of gastrointestinal bleeding and occurs with increased frequency in patients with aortic stenosis. It also occurs in patients with Osler Rendu Weber disease (hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia). Selective mesenteric angiography demonstrates vascular lakes and early venous filling in the region of the caecum. During active haemorrhage, extravascular accumulation of contrast medium may be disclosed. Superselective injection into the ileocolic branches of the superior mesenteric artery may be necessary for diagnosis and is necessary for embolotherapy.
