Cardiovascular ImagingAneurysm, ventricular septal
irregularly shaped sac projecting from the membranous portion of the ventricular septum into the right ventricular chamber. The
aneurysm may have the configuration of a windsock during
systole, and may have a small septal defect at the
tip or adjacent to it. The ventricular septum may be intact. Rarely, the
aneurysm projects into the right atrium. It is believed that the
aneurysm forms during closure of a membranous
ventricular septal defect from thinned septal tissue or the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve adherent to the defect. Infrequently, there is significant right ventricular outflow
obstruction or
tricuspid insufficiency. Right ventricular
angiography may disclose a filling defect in the right
ventricle while left ventricular
angiography produces opacification of the windsock or scallops-shaped
aneurysm with or without a left to right shunt.
