Rhodococcus equi infection

Rhodococcus equi is a Gram-positive bacillus typically found in the soil and animals occupying farm land. This organism has produced pneumonias in patients with HIV infection. Chest films generally demonstrate large thick-walled cavities and empyema which is difficult to treat with antibiotics. Surgery may be required to resect the area of infected lung.
