Pleuritis

refers to an acute or chronic inflammation of the pleura that manifests clinically by chest pain. Most often pleuritis leads to pleural effusion. However, pleuritis without an effusion may occur. In such a situation, chest radiographs may show diaphragmatic elevation, reduction in diaphragmatic excursion. Pleural thickening may also be present, better depicted on CT. In some cases of acute pleuritis, the chest radiograph may be normal.
