Large cell undifferentiated carcinoma

a relatively rare form of lung cancer characterized by rapid growth, early metastases and a poor prognosis. Its association with cigarette smoking is strong. Characterized by large cells with large nuclei these tumours are large and bulky, containing areas of necrosis and occuring in the periphery of the lung. They involve segmental or subsegmental bronchi by contiguous extension. Radiologically, these tumours present as a large peripheral mass, generally greater than 4 cm in diameter.
