Cryptogenic eosinophilic pneumonia

umbrella term for several conditions:

  • Lofflers syndrome is a relatively benign and self-limited condition characterized by migrating pulmonary consolidation;

  • acute eosinophilic pneumonia is a rapidly progressing illness of several days' duration with fever, severe hypoxaemia and diffuse lung consolidation mimicking adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS);

  • chronic eosinophilic pneumonia is associated with fever, cough and progressive shortness of breath of weeks to months duration; radiographs and CT show peripheral consolidation as the predominant finding, with prompt response to steroid treatment.

    Also included in this category is Churg Strauss syndrome and hypereosinophilic syndrome.
