Urogenital ImagingSegmental multicystic dysplastic kidney
multicystic dysplastic kidney that is localized to one portion of the kidney. Most cases are associated with a
congenital anomaly most often ureteric duplication but sometimes crossed and fused
renal ectopy and in these instances the affected segment of the kidney is in an obstructed upper pole. When the disease does not arise in the presence of an anomaly, the affected segment may be anywhere within the kidney. At one time this
lesion was referred to as a multilocular
cyst, but it should not be confused with
multilocular cystic nephroma, to which it is not related. Imaging usually includes
ultrasound, which is excellent for displaying the anomaly, and can be used for follow-up of the patient as well.
