Multiple renal veins

accessory veins commonly found draining the kidney into the vena cava. These are less common than supernumerary arteries.

Multiple renal veins are often retroaortic when present on the left side. Anomalies of renal vasculature are more common in ectopic kidneys. Horseshoe kidneys almost always have anomalous blood supply. Most anomalous renal vessels are without clinical significance, but may be of importance when renal or retroperitoneal surgery is undertaken. Optimal techniques for preoperative identification of these aberrant vessels are being explored. Evaluation before surgery with CT angiography or MR angiography can be useful.
