Disc kidney

(also called pancake kidney), a fusion abnormality where the kidneys are joined medially at their poles to form a ring-like renal mass. This occurs less commonly than crossed renal ectopy. The kidney is generally found overlying the sacrum. The collecting systems are separate, with each ureter entering the bladder normally. The lump or cake kidney is a rare abnormality in which there is extensive fusion between the two renal masses. See lump kidney The anomaly may be recognized at intravenous urography or ultrasound, but is best imaged by CT or MRI. Renal scintigraphy may be useful to assess both morphology and function.
