mucosa through the detrusor muscle of the bladder. It is, by definition, greater than 2 cm in diameter. The
vast majority are seen in males, and most occur in the region of the bladder base. When located in the area of the ureteric meatus, they are known as Hutch's diverticula. They may give rise to
obstruction or reflux. Although not as common, diverticula also occur in the fundus of the bladder. In this location they are sometimes bilateral and symmetrical, giving rise to the Mickey Mouse-appearance.
Bladder diverticula are well shown by any contrast enhanced study, including intravenous urogram, cystogram, CT or MRI. Congenital bladder divericulum can also be detected by ultrasound. Detection of bladder diverticula is facilitated if the bladder is distended. Another helpful finding is the evaluation of a post void film where the urinary bladder will empty while the size of the diverticulum will either not change or become larger.
