Urogenital Imaging

Brenner tumour, uterine

a Brenner tumour located in the myometrium, just beneath the uterine serosa. It is thought to arise from metaplasia of the peritoneal epithelium within the uterus, and is not considered an endometrial growth. On imaging, a Brenner tumour of the uterus mimics a uterine leiomyoma and the two cannot be distinguishsed. Imaging includes findings from ultrasound, CT or MRI.

Occasionally, a Brenner tumour of the uterus presents with postmenopausal bleeding due to endometrial hyperplasia. This is believed to arise secondary to stromal lutenization of the tumour, with consequent estrogen production. The diagnosis may be suggested when a patient with postmenopausal bleeding has evidence of a endometrial hyperplasia on imaging (See hyperplasia endometrial) in association with a solid adnexal mass (See Brenner tumour).
