Ask-upmark kidney

(Erik Ask-Upmark, 1901 - 1985, Swedish physician), focal renal hypoplasia resulting in a segmental renal scar. The patients (usually young women and girls) most frequently present with hypertension. Ask-Upmark kidneys are usually acquired, possibly representing a form of reflux nephropathy, although some appear to be congenital. The disorder is usually unilateral, producing a small kidney with deep, narrow, segmental scars (slit-scar) found in the midzone. While the scar can be detected with ultrasound, CT or MRI, the presence of a deep scar is often overlooked.
