Volvulus, small bowel

twisting of the small bowel loop upon itself leading to a closed loop obstruction. When the twist is pronounced, the blood supply to the affected loop is compromised. It usually presents with severe abdominal pain at acute onset. Plain abdominal films may show an airfilled distended loop of small bowel. Barium or iodine contrast enema may show obstruction.
